Multi Instrumentalist, Songwriter, Teacher

I play and teach Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Ukulele, and I cover a wide range of styles. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced musician looking to take your playing up a level, I'm looking forward to working with you.

I particularly specialise in helping students to play by ear and improvise. This comes with a solid foundation of good technique and just enough theory (understanding) for what you want to play. All of my lessons are bespoke and tailored exactly to what you want to play. We will always have fun!

I offer lesson both online and in person. At the start of the pandemic, I was a little nervous about moving my lessons online. However I was pleasantly surprised with how well they worked. As such my online lessons are slightly more structured, which has enabled my students to make massive progress with working out melodies by ear, playing to a metronome and playing tunes. It’s been great for me to step back and listen to my students playing, and to then provide clear feedback on how to improve. Many people still prefer in person lessons, due to being able to play/jam with me in the same room. This is an important aspect of playing music, however my online students have really enjoyed playing along with my bespoke backing track recordings, which they can play along with in between lessons as well.

For my in person lessons at my house we’ll have our lessons either in our lounge or in the Banjo Shed (where I build my instruments and record music). We can make the most of being in the same room by being able to jam together. I’ll play a complementary instrument providing the backing for you to explore soloing and to play along with. For example for my advanced Banjo students, I often provide backing on acoustic guitar (whilst also giving examples of playing the banjo when required), as this helps to give you a feel of what it’s like to play in a band and really complements the banjo. In person lessons are a great way to kickstart your playing and help give you the skills and confidence to play with other people!

About

I’m a multi instrumentalist, composer, songwriter and music teacher. Through my music playing and teaching I like to think (in my own small way) that I’m making a difference in the world, spreading some joy through my music and making a positive impact on peoples lives.

I love to see my students grow in confidence through their music playing, and it’s a massive privilege to be a part of people’s musical journeys.

With my Fiance Ella and our two cats (Whinnie and Wilfred) and our dogs Byron and Banjo, we are based in Hassocks just outside of Brighton. After buying our first home, we’ve just finished building a shed (The Banjo Shed) for my instrument making and music recording. More info on this to come shortly….
